QA-49, 11 July 2019, Statement of the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Hami Aksoy, in response to a Question Regarding Some Allegations Published in the Press about the Continental Shelf and Islands

Republic Of Türkiye Ministry Of Foreign Affairs 12.07.2019

Recently, some groundless allegations have been published in some media organs asserting that “Turkey has lost over ninety two thousand square kilometres of continental shelf and her sovereignty over certain islands through a letter submitted to the UN on 18 March 2019”.

These unfounded allegations based on a profound ignorance or an intentional distortion of facts do not reflect the truth at all. Our Government is determined to protect Turkey’s legitimate rights and interests over her continental shelf in the Eastern Mediterranean stemming from international law. In this respect, our position on the limits of Turkish continental shelf has been registered with the UN on appropriate occasions since 2004. There is no change in this position, which is a national policy of the State.
